Effortless Beauty and Year-Round Colour in a Functional Doonan Garden

This Doonan garden blends privacy, bold planting and water efficiency with raised beds, rain tanks, and smart irrigation for a vibrant, practical outdoor space.

Designing for Privacy and Street Appeal

The owners of this Doonan residence wanted a garden that offered both function and beauty.

Their vision included colourful, low-maintenance planting that would create privacy from the road without feeling closed in.

We designed a free-flowing garden layout that wraps naturally around the home, softening the building edges and offering something visually interesting from every window.

To help balance the site’s existing heights, Corten steel edging was used to form raised garden beds, giving the illusion of levelness while adding structure.

These beds were positioned to enhance privacy where needed and to guide the garden’s natural movement around the property.

Sustainable Solutions for a Tank-Water Property

With the property relying entirely on tank water, plant selection was critical.

We chose hardy species with colourful foliage and seasonal flowering, ensuring year-round visual interest with minimal water needs.

A fully automated irrigation system was installed, connected to newly added rainwater tanks to support the gardens through drier months.

A rain sensor was included to reduce unnecessary watering and help conserve water whenever possible.

Managing Water in Every Season

Given the area’s exposure to heavy seasonal rain, we incorporated dry river beds throughout the landscape to redirect surface runoff.

These channels blend naturally into the garden’s design, helping to move excess water away from key structures and prevent erosion.

They also act as subtle design features, contributing to the natural flow of the space.

Bringing Year-Round Colour to a Functional Garden

The planting palette was carefully selected to maintain interest across all seasons.

This included a mix of foliage tones, flower colours, and textures that deliver vibrancy without demanding constant care.

Each plant was placed to serve both a practical and aesthetic purpose, whether to create screening, define a viewline, or attract pollinators.

Expert Construction for Lasting Results

From the swimming pool surrounds to the finishing details of the garden edges, the entire project was delivered with precision by skilled tradespeople.

Attention to detail was key in ensuring that the site drainage, irrigation, and overall landscape worked together seamlessly.

The final result is a colourful, water-wise garden that brings privacy, functionality, and beauty to every part of this Doonan home.
